Oxytetracycline blood serum level studies in healthy, pneumonic and recovered cattle

Oxytetracycline (OTC) was given at 5 mg/lb body weight by various routes and regimens to 127 normal, pneumonic, and recovered calves ranging in weight from 210 to 539 lb. An additional two normal calves received OTC i/v at 2.5 mg/lb. Serum was collected from each animal over a 24-hour period after treatment and bioassayed for OTC. Serum concentrations were not affected by concomitant treatment with 2 mg dexamethasone per g OTC given i/m or s/c. In general, serum OTC levels were higher in animals treated by the i/m and s/c routes when the total dose of OTC administered was injected at not more than 10 cc per site, rather than at a single site. Serum OTC levels were higher in pneumonic animals treated i/v or i/m than in the same animals after they had recovered or in other healthy animals treated by the same routes.
