Repeated blood samples were taken between 5 h before and 10 h after calving. Ten of the eleven cows that developed parturient paresis did so between 2 and 35 h after calving, while the eleventh did so 5 h before calving. Those cows that became ill 5-10 h after calving had low Ca and P before calving, while in those that did not become ill until after 20 h, Ca and P did not fall until after calving. Some fall in Ca and P occurred in the seven healthy cows. It was necessary for the Ca concentration to fall below 1.5 mmol/litre for at least ten hours before functional disorders developed.
