Intravenous infusions of 1.25 mmol/kg body weight of butyrate, isobutyrate, isovalerate, and capronate to young cattle were followed by rises in blood plasma insulin levels, the highest rise being recorded 15 minutes after injection. Maximum rises, following infusion, were ten times the original value for butyrate, eight times in response to isobutyrate, 23 times after isovalerate, and 20 times after capronate. Insulin rises in blood plasma, following infusion of volatile fatty acids, were smaller in calves and adult cattle. Highest rises in calves were caused by isobutyrate and in adult cattle by capronate. Temporary significant elevation of blood plasma glucose levels was recorded from young cattle in response to isovalerate and capronate and from adult cattle after capronate. The levels of free fatty acids and of total alpha-amino-N decreased significantly in response to infusion of some of the solutions.
