In a group of 51 children with insulin-dependent diabetes the nitrogen metabolism was evaluated. Lower serum levels of alpha-amine nitrogen were found (only in girls) and higher 24-hour urinary excretion of alpha-amine nitrogen (particularly in thin children) and total nitrogen (particularly in older children) was demonstrated in relation to healthy controls. No significant influence of the duration and the degree of control od diabetes and the required insulin dosage on any of these parameters was observed.
