Six Holstein steers aged 3-6 months were fed varying amounts of a concentrated diet, together with roughage equivalent to 1% body wt. When the concentrate was equivalent to 1.5% body wt, sediment appeared in the urine after 10 days and gradually increased in amount; when the ration was increased to 2.0% and 2.5% body wt, the urolithiasis syndrome appeared within 2 months. When the concentrated ration was restricted to 1% and roughage allowed ad lib., no urinary sediment was found during 3 months' observation. Calves fed the concentrate drank less water; experiments reducing the volume of water available by a third and a half normal exacerbated the syndrome.
