The efficacy of prostaglandins in inducing calving is well known but later effects are not. Parturition was induced in 26 of a herd of 180 dairy cows and, from their subsequent performance, the authors conclude that induction of parturition may be justified if: the veterinary surgeon fully briefs the farmer on the probable outcome and difficulties which may arise; all cows are examined rectally; staff and housing are of a high standard; and regular veterinary supervision is acceptable. In a commercial dairy herd there were no significant differences in milk yield, culling rate, mastitis incidence or subsequent fertility between cows calving normally and those in which calving was induced using dexamethasone and cloprostenol. However, av. milk yield and fertility indices were poorer for treated than for untreated cows.
