Trials on induction of parturition in pigs with the luteolytic prostaglandin F2 alpha-analogue HR 837 V

In 317 sows given a single intramuscular injection of 0.2-1.5 mg PG analogue on days 108-120 of pregnancy, parturition was induced in 74.4% of animals within 21-30 h; induction within 21-30 h was best (74.5-86.1%) when the injection was given on days 111-113 of pregnancy, but size of dose had no marked effect. Pregnancy duration in treated animals averaged 113.6 days v 114.6 for 317 untreated controls. In 265 treated sows, the number of live and dead piglets born averaged 9.97 and 0.66 resp. v 9.39 and 0.73 in 279 controls, and the number alive at 3 wk of age averaged 8.32 v 8.09. Farrowing was not adversely affected or prolonged by treatment, and milk secretion was not impaired. The effect of PG on plasma progesterone level was compared in 6 treated and 2 untreated sows, but there were no significant differences between groups.
