Fertility in anoestrous dairy cows following treatment with prostaglandin F2 alpha or the synthetic analogue fenprostalene

Prostaglandin F2 alpha tromethamine salt (Dinolytic) or fenprostalene was injected into 85 cows anoestrous after calving (oestrous not observed within 60 days of parturition) and 60 cows anoestrous after insemination (oestrus not observed within 25 days of insemination and not pregnant). The cows were inseminated 3-4 days after dosing. Of the post-partum anoestrous cows given Dinolytic, 57% were diagnosed pregnant after 22 days (progesterone in milk) and 38% after 60 days (rectal palpation), while of those given fenprostalene 60% were diagnosed pregnant at 22 days and 46% at 60 days. In the post-insemination anoestrous group, 60% of those given Dinolytic were diagnosed pregnant at 22 days and 30% at 60 days, while 66% of those given fenprostalene were diagnosed pregnant at 22 days and 43% at 60 days. It was concluded that a single injection of either preparation administered during the luteal phase of the oestrous cycle resulted in a similar level of efficacy.
