A pedigree herd of 16 dairy cows showed only 10% of conceptions following insemination. By blood progesterone studies, and rectal palpations, five cows were shown to be acyclic. The nutritional parameters of the ration were analysed, and it was shown that the blood biochemical profiles of these cows were related to dietary imbalance. This imbalance was corrected by increasing the carbohydrate and calcium content of the ration, after which the blood biochemical status, and the fertility of the cows improved.
