Hypomagnesaemia in periparturient dairy cows

There was a difference in the occurrence of hypomagnesaemia in periparturient cows between East and West Scotland. Of 27 cows with metabolic disorders in West Scotland, six were severely and another six mildly hypomagnesaemic. Of 35 cows in East Scotland, only six were midly hypomagnesaemic. The magnesium status of a herd should be ascertained before the form of milk fever control is decided on.
