Data collected monthly from 206 herds in England and Wales under the Dairy Herd Health and Productivity Scheme gave a 1% rate of clinical hypomagnesaemia in dairy cows in the year up to the end of August 1981. The highest rate was in May. The west side of the country had a greater problem. The rate of subclinical hypomagnesaemia (serum Mg < 1.9/100 ml or 0.78 mmol/l) was as high as 7% among milkers and 15% among dry cows in some months. As much as 2-3 times the traditional 50 g calcined magnesite per animal per day has been found necessary to restore and maintain normal magnesium status.
