Incidence of hypomagnesaemia in dry cows

Milk fever, ascribed tentatively to hypomagnesaemia before parturition, was diagnosed in 7 cows in late summer and autumn. They were treated with calcium and magnesium by vein and Ca by mouth. Study of Mg in blood plasma and urine during several months for most of the herd, lactating or not, while on pasture or in stalls, suggested that supply of utilizable Mg was inadequate, especially among cows fed entirely on roughage, all of which was produced on the farm.
