Anopheles culicifacies is an important vector of malaria in India and Pakistan and has been under intensive laboratory investigations in Lahore for several years. A few male and female adults were found with a gap ventrally between the eyes. This mutant, known as abnormal eye (ae), is autosomal and recessive and is different from the previously described Vs mutant, which is sex-linked, dominant and lethal in males and involves a wider gap between the eyes. In this paper, the formal genetic and linkage analyses of ae are reported, and evidence is presented that it is under the genetic control of an autosomal locus located on chromosome 2.
