Luteolysis, luteostasis, and the effect of prostaglandin F2 alpha in cows after endometrial irritation

Intrauterine injection of dilute iodine solution caused transient necrotizing endometritis. The oestrous cycles of cows injected on day 4 or day 15 of the cycle, respectively, were significantly shortened or lengthened. In cows injected on day 15 luteal phase concentrations of progesterone persisted 3-4 days longer than in controls, and decreased rapidly in the last 3 days of oestrus. Luteinizing hormone values were highest near the onset of oestrus. Serum progesterone values in cows injected on day 15 and given 5 mg prostaglandin F2 alpha on day 16 decreased sharply by 24 hours, and oestrus occurred 3 days after the second injection. It was concluded that intrauterine iodine infusion might have destroyed the source of the luteolytic factor and that luteolysin synthesis probably resumed during endometrial repair.
