Effect of prostaglandin F2 alpha on sperm transport in the reproductive tract of the ewe

Approximately 24 h after the onset of oestrus, 8 Swedish Landrace ewes were inseminated with 0.25 ml frozen semen, containing 300 X 106 spermatozoa, plus 300 mu g PGF2 alpha /ml semen; 8 ewes were inseminated with unsupplemented semen, but were injected with 2.5 mg PGF2 alpha 10 min after insemination, and 8 controls were inseminated with unsupplemented semen only. In the 3 groups, the number of spermatozoa (X 103) recovered 24 h after insemination averaged 13.9, 10.0 and 0.4 resp. from the oviduct, 2.6, 1.0 and 0.6 from the uterotubal junction, 6.4, 33.5 and 2.0 from the uterus, and 7.6, 10.0 and 6.5 from the cervix. The differences between the treated females and the controls were significant.
