Intramuscular administration of 39 mg dexamethasone/head to 17 Friesland heifers on day 267 of pregnancy (in an attempt to prevent dystocia) induced parturition in about 57 h. Three animals required assistance during parturition and one had to be given a second injection 5 days later. Retained placenta was seen in 11 of 16 heifers given a single injection. Of 14 heifers calving without assistance, 13 were pregnant when examined 5-7 months later.
