Isolation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 from dairy cattle associated with two cases of haemolytic uraemic syndrome

Two cases of haemolytic uraemic syndrome which provide evidence that raw milk may be a vehicle of transmission of Escherichia coli O157:H7 are described. Both affected individuals had drunk raw milk before onset of symptoms and E. coli O157:H7 was isolated from faeces of cows on the farms which had provided the milk in both cases. E. coli O157:H7 was also detected in the faeces of one patient. In neither case were Salmonella, Shigella, Yersinia, Campylobacter or viral agents detected in patients' faeces.
