When d-penicillamine (50 mg/100 g body wt) was administered as a thiol antioxidant to guinea pigs before and on subsequent days after infection with ascarid eggs, an increase in the content of endogenous thiols and protein SH-groups in tissues, activation of protective responses of the body and 2-fold decrease in migration of ascarid larvae occurred. When guinea pigs were given cysteine hydrochloride (10 mg/100 g body wt) as SH-donator, a 2-fold decrease in migration of mulleria larvae was observed. With the administration of cystine (15 mg/100 g body wt) which is not a thiol antioxidant, no limitation of mulleria larvae migration was noted. Thiol antioxidants apparently are powerful nonspecific factors for increasing resistance, exerting an active influence on the protective barrier systems of the host.
