Investigations of plasma from 196 subjects aged over 50 yr showed that in the period of aging and senility the activity of the clotting factor XIII (FSF, plasma transamidase) decreased despite a rise of its concentration in the plasma. The cause of this reduction in the activity of this enzyme is the age-related progressive fall of free thiol groups (SH) in the plasma. A statistically significant negative correlation was demonstrated between the concentration of thiol groups and FSF activity, and between the concentration of thiol groups and the age of the subjects. Free thiol groups are of decisive importance for manifestation of FSF enzymatic activity.
