Activity of the fibrin stabilizing factor, clotting factor XIII, (FSF) was determined in the plasma of 106 patients with proliferative diseases of the hemopoietic system, including 46 with myeloblastic leukemia, 25 with chronic myeloid leukemia, 19 with chronic lymphatic leukemia, 9 with multiple myeloma, 7 with Hodgkin's disease, and in 30 healthy controls. A significant impairment of plasma ability to form stabilized clot was demonstrated in patients with acute myeloblastic leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia and multiple myeloma. Impairment of clot stabilization was due to decreased level of FSF and its reduced activity due to deficiency of free SH groups. The determinations of other clotting parameters (fibrinoigen, PDF , ethanol test) suggest that decreased factor XIII level in these diseases may be a result of its consumption in the process of chronic intravascular clotting. Disturbances of clot stabilization process may occur in the pathomechanism of hemorrhagic complications associated with proliferative diseases of the hemopoietic system.
