Magnetic resonance has been used extensively to measure diffusion in nonmedical systems because of its documented sensitivity to motion at the molecular level. Recognizing the potential value of this sensitivity in medicine, Dr. Denis LeBihan spent much of the 1980s developing and investigating MR techniques that measure diffusion in vivo.
