The immuno-diffusion method for the identification of cattle vaccinated with Brucella abortus strain 45-20

Gel-diffusion tests showed that serum from cattle vaccinated with Brucella abortus strain 45/20 and free of infection contained precipitins against the specific rough surface antigen but not against the specific smooth surface antigen of Brucella. In contrast, serum from cattle infected with virulent Br. abortus had precipitins against smooth surface antigen only. Serum from cattle vaccinated with strain 19 or H 38 vaccines did not develop precipitins against the rough antigen. The gel-diffusion test, using rough antigen extracted by hot-saline is recommended as a simple method for the identification of cattle vaccinated with 45/20.
