This replaces abstract no. 2570 of 1985. Commenting on a paper by Nowlan & De Geus [VB 55, abst. 1823], the authors point out that the standard agglutination test modified by adding the chelating agent EDTA to the brucella antigen should be used and interpreted only in conjunction with the complement fixation test. Tests on over 4000 cattle showed that in rare instances the high agglutinin titre of infected cattle may be reduced by the action of EDTA, although never below 100 IU; the CF test remained positive. [These conclusions are supported by K.H. Nielsen, J.R. Duncan & B.W. Stemshorn, ibid. p.550].
