In July 1979 a Friesland cow aborted and Brucella abortus biotype 1 was isolated from the fetus. The cow was immediately placed in isolation and serological tests carried out. The cow was never rebred and was kept in isolation for the next 8 years while serum was collected at irregular intervals. In April 1989, the cow was slaughtered. Tissues were taken from each quarter of the udder, from left and right supramammary lymph nodes and from left and right deep inguinal lymph nodes. B. abortus biotype 1 was isolated in pure culture from all these organs.
