Fasciolicidal activity of diamphenethide and niclofolan against Fasciola hepatica in sheep in the Altiplano region of Bolivia

In the Altiplano Region of Bolivia, sheep on a farm where animals were dying from acute Fasciola hepatica infection were given diamphenethide at 85 to 116 mg/kg body-weight or niclofolan at 3.2 to 4.3 mg/kg. Diamphenethide was found to be highly effective; almost 100% of immature F. hepatica were killed but a few adult flukes were still alive at post-mortem examination 10 days after treatment. No adult flukes were recovered from the animals which received niclofolan but the drug appeared to have no effect against immature flukes under 8 mm long. During the period of the experiment 5 untreated sheep died of acute fascioliasis; no treated sheep died. No signs of toxicity were observed.
