Triclabendazole-resistant Fasciola hepatica in southwest Wales

A flock of ewes grazing in a field with a boggy area was treated with a product containing triclabendazole and levamisole (combinex) in early August and again in mid October. PM examination of a ewe in early November indicated death due to fasciolosis with adult fluke present. All ewes were treated again with triclabendazole and 5 days later a ewe, killed due to poor condition, was also suffering from fasciolosis. All sheep were then treated with closantel (Flukiver) and 7 days later no fluke eggs were found by the sensitive flotation method in 10 ewes.
