Studies on Fasciola hepatica miracidia labelled with radioselenium

Mice orally infected with 20 Fasciola hepatica metacercariae were given Se75-methionine orally (2 doses of 18 mu Ci Se75-methionine daily for 4 days), killed after 5 days, and the fluke eggs harvested. They hatched after 16 days at 26 deg C, and infected Lymnaea truncatula. The labelled miracidia were used in experiments designed to study their attraction to various snail species. L. truncatula, L. pereger and L. palustris all attracted the miracidia, although there was a predilection for L. truncatula, the normal host. The miracidia did not infect Aplexa hypnorum and Physa acuta.
