The factors which affect the intensity and duration of excretion of antibiotics in milk, especially where their presence results from intramammary injection of the animal, are discussed in the light of literature data. The min. 5-day interval between treatment of animal and use of the milk for consumption or manufacturing purposes prescribed by existing German regulations does not allow for variability in rate of excretion of antibiotics as influenced by their nature and dosage, and needs to be replaced by specifications of the max. contents of the various antibiotics permitted in such milks and of the procedures to be used in their determination.
