Studies on the life cycle and developmental morphology of Cyclodontostomum purvisi (Adams, 1933) a hookworm parasite of Malayan giant rats

The life-cycle of Cyclodontostomum purvisi from Malayan giant rats (Rattus mulleri, R. sabanus and R. whiteheadi) was completed experimentally; the larval stages and adults are described and illustrated. Eggs laid in the 8 to 16-cell stage hatched in 24 hours at 26 to 28 deg C; first and 2nd-stage free-living larvae were succeeded 4 to 5 days after hatching by the sheathed larvae which infected the host orally. Moulting took place in the anterior part of the intestine 12 to 24 hours after ingestion; the next moult occurred 10 to 15 days after infection and the moult to 5th-stage at 17 to 23 days after infection. The development of the buccal capsule, reproductive system and copulatory bursa were studied in detail. Some specimens of C. purvisi from a preserved collection differed from the author's specimens and may be a different species.
