In osteoarthritis, as in rheumatoid arthritis, the problem of assessment remains. Pain and stiffness, the dominant symptoms, are difficult to measure and are heavily biased by subjective influences. Thermography, used with care, can provide useful objective data on inflammation. Variations between subjects are, as in all methods, inevitable. Larger numbers of patients and good placebo control enable the changes to be more accurately assessed. The thermograph is a more sensitive means of assessing temperature distribution than contact methods, and more reliable than the clinical thermometer.
