The binding of naproxen to bovine serum albumin was measured at various temperatures and pH levels using the equilibrium dialysis method. It remained almost unchanged under the different test conditions employed. Five nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs appreciably reduced the binding of naproxen in the following order of magnitude: flufenamic acid .gtoreq. flurbiprofen > indomethacin > phenylbutazone .mchgt. salicylic acid .simeq. 0. The displacing effect of a series of saturated free fatty acids on the binding of naproxen markedly increased until 12 C atoms and then gradually decreased above this value. The concurrent administration of these drugs and the free fatty acids contained in the plasma may have many effects on the binding of naproxen and its behavior in the body.
