The toxicity of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has been investigated at the Pathology and Toxicology laboratories of Mead Johnson and Company using various species, routes, and dosage formulations. Although considerable safety data have been obtained from laboratory animals to characterize the systemic as well as local toxicities resulting from the administration of NAC by the inhalation, dermal, and ophthalmic routes, this study deals solely with preclinical safety studies in laboratory animals administered NAC either orally or parenterally for acute, subacute, or chronic dosing periods. Based on the results of these investigations in laboratory animals, NAC is considered to be a safe compound for administration to man as an agent to prevent or reverse potential adverse reactions resulting from cytotoxic compounds.
