The teratogenic effect of an antiphlogistic substance, 5- (2-diethyl-aminoethyl) -3 - phenyl -1,2,4 - oxadiazole citrate (oxolamine) was studied in NMRI albino mice. In untreated animals there occurred a high frequency (14%) of skeletal abnormalities, primarily consisting of supernumerary ribs. When the mother mice were injected during days 9-11 post coitum (p.c.) there were more fetuses with such abnormalities. This increase was significant even when injections were made with isotonic saline, possibly caused by the stress of handling and injection. When oxolamine was injected, the frequency of abnormal fetuses increased further. The experiments did not influence litter size, fetal weight, and frequency of gross malformations. In one dose group (1 mg/mouse) an increased number of resorptions occurred.
