In view of the increasing number of prescriptions of ointments with tetracyclin hydrochloride, the necessity was felt of a study on the microbiological stability of this antibiotic. Several possibilities were taken into consideration, determining the stability of the drug in lipophil ointment bases, in hydrophil bases, In the presence or absence of conservatives, in aseptic processing or in storage without special compliance with the rules of asepsy. The influence of temperature and light were likewise studied. It is concluded that the highest microbiological stability is obtained in the ointments prepared, under strict compliance with the rules of asepsy and in the presence of conservatives. The hydrophil bases do not appear to have any influence on the stability of the antibiotic and tetracyclin can therefore be prescribed in ointments prepared with these bases, which have a deeper action.
