Eight days after introduction to a feedlot where coccidiosis was a problem, two of four groups (each of 100 lambs) were fed amprolium at 50 mg/kg body wt daily for 21 days. Clinical coccidiosis did not occur in either the treated or control groups. Faecal oocyst counts reached a peak of 70000-77000 per g in the two control groups. In the treated groups, counts were reduced to less than 500 per g during the period of treatment, rose during the first week after withdrawal of the drug, then fell. It was concluded that amprolium suppressed the developement of coccidia without interfering with the immune response.
