Eimeria tenella, in heavy infections, causes severe clinical disease but only transient nutritional effects, and the small intestine is not affected. The acervulina group (E. acervulina, E. mivati and E. mitis), though causing less severe signs of illness and low mortality, produces profound and permanent changes in the whole of the small intestine-the changes are not confined to the duodenum, where the parasite develops.
