Intestinal polyps in small ruminants with chronic coccidiosis

Polyps were found in the jejunum and ileum of seven lambs and eight goats with persistent diarrhoea. Histological examination of the polyps revealed coccidia. These were identified as mixed Eimeria ovina, E. nina-kohlyakimovae and E, intricata in five of the lambs and mixed E. ovina and E. nina-kohlyakimovae in seven of the goats. The polyps were considered to be reactive proliferations in response to chronic coccidiosis. As they do not occur in all cases, other factors must be involved.
