A letter comments on the article by Stone in the April 20 issue on the impact of the Chernobyl nuclear accident on human health. Stone failed to mention the report from the UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation released last year that evaluated the radiological situation in the highly contaminated regions of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. Apart from the increased incidence of childhood thyroid cancer in the general population of contaminated areas discussed by Stone, this report found no evidence of a major radiation-induced health impact.
