Subsequent to the detection of several cases of tinea capitis in Hauts-de-Seine, France, in 1998-1999, it was investigated whether the legal decree requiring eviction from school and an epidemiology survey was being implemented properly. Two sample surveys were carried out among 50 school doctors in the Hauts-de-Seine department and 110 dermatologists working in the Paris suburbs. Eviction from school was rare and was not based on dermatophyte type (anthropophilic or zoophilic agent). Similarly, epidemiological surveys were neglected and the only action taken was clinical treatment for family members. Systematic sampling in the community was exceptional. Thus, despite the rise in the number of cases of tinea capitis in the Paris suburbs, the decree is not often implemented. Dermatologists would appear to be responsible for this situation, especially in case of Microsporum langeronii, which is very contagious in nursery schools.
