A study of tinea capitis in Jordan (West Bank)

During Jan. 1983-Oct. 1984, 425 cases of tinea capitis were diagnosed clinically in the West Bank of Jordan. These comprised 35% of all dermatophytosis cases seen during this period. The number of tinea capitis infections varied with season, the highest numbers occurring in winter and spring months and lowest numbers occurring in summer months. Females accounted for approx. 60% of scalp infections. Specimens from 302 tinea captitis patients were cultured and 217 isolates of dermatophytes were recovered, including 108 Trichophyton violaceum, 69 Microsporum canis, 19 T. schoenleinii, 8 T. mentagrophytes, 2 Microsporum gypseum and 6 other T. spp. (including T. simii, T. yaoundei, T. tonsurans and T. megninii).
