An epidemiological survey (using cluster sampling) of tinea capitis in the Central African Republic is reported. Of 1423 children (825 boys, 598 girls, aged 5-16 yr) examined, the prevalence of tinea capitis was 3.4%. More boys (5.3%) were infected than girls (0.7%) and prevalence decreased with increasing age. Microsporum langeronii was isolated in 98% of cases and Trichophyton soudanense in 1 case.
