Trichophyton tonsurans was found in 90.6% of 265 culture-proven cases of tinea capitis in the 1970s but in the 1950s it was responsible for only 1.6% of 378 cases. The study indicated the need for cultures, because nonfluorescent tinea capitis may go undetected. Microsporum was isolated from 9.4% in the 1970s and in 98.1% in 1950s.
