Emetine in the treatment of severe nonamoebic infections

In 19 seriously ill patients with septic conditions emetine was administered after an unsuccessful course of antibotics. All patients recovered in a short time though in some of then persisting bacteriuria was noted. So far emetine proved effective also in treatment of herpes zoster, herpes simplex and keratoconjunctivitis epidemia. The problem of the mechanism of the therapeutic action of emetine in non-amoebic infections is briefly discussed.
