Evaluation of azthreonam in the treatment of severe infections: study of 17 cases

The effect of aztreonam is studied in 17 patients with severe infections of different etiologies (Escherichia coli, Proteus sp., Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Morganella morganni, Enterobacter cloacae, Bacteroides fragilis and Streptococcus faecalis). Aztreonam dosage was 1 g/8 h for periods ranging from 10-42 days. A high rate of clinical cures (88.2%), with microbiological cure in 58.8% of cases, was shown. The drug was well tolerated in all cases. The high rate of colonization by enterococci (29.9%) may constitute a serious limitation to aztreonam administration.
