In order to find out if the intake of Plantago psyllium mucilage decreases serum lipids, glycemia and body weight like certain dietary fibers, 15 g of psyllium mucilage were given before each meal during ten days to 19 obese and 8 type II diabetic subjects. A significant reduction of serum total cholesterol and cholesterol from low and very low density lipoproteins was found in both groups. Triglyceride reduction was significant only in obese patients, while serum concentration of alpha cholesterol did not change. Fasting blood glucose decreased a mean of 27.6 mg/dl in diabetic and 5.6 mg/dl in obese patients (both p<0.05). Body weight decreased a mean of 1,810 g in the obese (p<0.01) and 1,212 g in the diabetic (p<0.05) groups. Psyllium mucilage may be of some help in the management of obesity, diabetes mellitus and some hyperlipidemias.
