Relative unresponsiveness of obese diabetic compared to obese non-diabetic subjects to the weight-reducing effect of fenfluramine

For at least 6 weeks fenfluramine was given to 23 obese Ugandan adults 21 to 70, mean 45 years old, of whom 11 women were nondiabetic and 4 men and 8 women were diabetic and maintained on insulin or tolbutamide. All but 1 of the nondiabetics lost weight, from 2.1 to 7.4 kg, but only 4 of the diabetics lost any weight; the difference between the groups was significant.
