Preparation in gnotobiotic animals of monospecific reference serums against viruses

Monospecific serum of high titre was produced in gnotobiotic pigs and calves against procine enteroviruses (type 1 Konratice strain, type 1 Talfan strain, typee 2 T80 strain, type 3 02b strain, and V13 strain), porcine adenoviruses (type 1 Compton 25R strain, type 2 Compton A47 strain, type 3 Compton 6618 strain, and type 4 F618 strain), porcine parvovirus (G10/1 strain), bovine adenovirus (type 3 Weybridge strain), infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (Colorado strain), bovine parainfluenza (type 3 SF-4 strain), and bovine viral diarrhea (NADL strain). Gnotobiotic pigs and calves seem to respond to viral antigen better than ordinary animals. Serum was freeze-dried in ampoules containing 0.5 or 1 ml. Heterologous antibody activity was not detected when the serums were extensively tested against heterologous viruses from different animal species. After the accelerated thermal degradation test at 56 deg C for 14 days the final titres did not fall below half the original titre.
