Commercial thromboplastins prepared from rabbit brain, human placenta (Thromborel S) and home-made human brain were calibrated against the IRP (BCT/253, RBT/79 and the 1st National Reference Preparation (T-HT/15/85) to determine the ISI of each preparation. The results showed that rabbit brain thromboplastin had low sensitivity (ISI .simeq. 2) while human thromboplastin had high sensitivity (ISI .simeq. 1). Further, comparison between rabbit and human thromboplastin in detecting coagulation abnormalities in liver also showed that human thromboplastin could detect abnormalities between than rabbit thromboplastin (P < 0.05). Therefore, it is recommended that human thromboplastin should be used in routine laboratory tests for Quick's One Stage prothrombin time.
