Drug evaluation of pyrantel pamoate against Ancylostoma, Toxocara, and Toxascaris in eleven dogs

Pyrantel pamoate was given at about 1.029 mg/kg body-weight in food to 11 dogs naturally infected with hookworm. Faecal examinations and autopsy 72 hours after treatment showed that Ancylostoma was completely removed from 9 of the dogs (average efficacy 99%). In 4 dogs with both Toxocara and Ancylostoma, average efficacy against Toxocara was 96%, and in 5 dogs with both Toxascaris and Ancylostoma, efficacy against Toxascaris was 93%. Only 2 dogs were infected with all 3 species, and the average efficacy was 90%. There was no apparent activity against Trichuris vulpis found in one dog and Dipylidium found in another. No side effects were observed.
