Treatment of Ascaris, hookworm and Trichuris infections with a single dose of pyrantel pamoate (Combantrin)

In Taiwan, 630 children with concurrent infections of Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus and Trichuris trichiura were divided into 4 groups and treated with a single dose of pyrantel pamoate at 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 or 10 mg/kg body-weight. A dose of 10 mg/kg was found to be very effective against A. duodenale and Ascaris lumbricoides, slightly less so against N. amercanus, and moderately effective against light T. trichiura infections. 7.5 or 5 mg/kg was highly effective against A. lumbricoides and Ancylostoma duodenale. 2.5 mg/kg gave a 93% egg reduction rate of Ascaris lumbricoides and a negative conversion rate of 85%. Side effects were infrequent, mild and transient.s.
